Vredendal is a small mainly agricultural town located in the Oliphants River valley. It was first settled by Afrikaners in 1732 when Pieter van Zyl was granted land and the right to farm. The town thrives on agriculture, particularly the growing and processing of grapes into wine, and is part of the Oliphants River Wine Route. It is close to the beaches of the beautiful and wild west coast of the Western Cape, in the area also known as the Matzikama, and the gateway for the wild flowers of Namaqualand in late winter and early spring.
