South African Museum and South African National Gallery

The South African Museum and the South African National Gallery are right next to each other in the Company Gardens in the centre of Cape Town.

The South African museum is the nation's foremost museum of Natural History and Human Sciences. The extensive display dedicated to the San hunter gatherers in the Ethnographic wing is not to be missed. Other African tribes are also represented with significant rock paintings also on display.

The Natural History part of the museum features large displays or marine and land animals with the Whale and Shark displays standing out.

The Cape Town Planetarium is also housed in the museum with daily shows for children and adults detailing the night sky extensively.

The South African National Gallery contains a permanent collection of Contemporary South African art while also being home to various popular international travelling art exhibitions.
