The Company Gardens in central Cape Town, founded by Jan van Riebeek in 1652, first served as a vegetable garden for the Cape Colony. Nowadays, its role has changed to that of a park in a cosmopolitan city. The park is worth a walk through with its Japanese garden, fish pond and aviary as distractions and is conveniently located near St Georges Cathedral, Parliament, the South African National Art Gallery, the South African Museum and the planetarium.
