It might come as a little bit of a surprise but this area also has a number of fine wine estates. Excellent wines, especially pinot noir and chardonnay are made in this region, benefiting from the cool breeze off the Atlantic Ocean during the hot summer months while absorbing the long hours of sunshine.
Many of the vineyards are located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The few wineries in the region have established excellent local and international reputations. Their wines, the estate grounds and the tastings warrant a visit for a pleasant afternoon. Be sure to confirm the estate opening hours, especially during the winter months.
