Oudtshoorn - Garden Route

Oudtshoorn is the largest Ostrich farming area in South Africa and is situated in the area known as the Klein Karoo.

The numerous farms throughout the area are renowned for their Ostrich farming. Some can be visited to find out more about the long legged feathered creatures. The curio shops all have painted Ostrich eggs, Ostrich leather bags, leather accessories and Ostrich meats.

But that is not all, Oudtshoorn is a place of beauty. All roads leading to town, go through dramatic moutain passes making the journey to Outdshoorn a feast for the eyes.

The CP Nel museum in town is of particular interest especially concerning the history of the ostrich boom and trade of the early 20th century. With the financial wealth that accompanied the boom, many opulent and stylish buildings were erected that have now been declared National Monuments.

Activities in the region include a visit to the fantastic Cango Caves, off road driving and hiking.

Visit Outdshoorn and enjoy the warm hospitality of its people in the heart of the Klein Karoo.
