Founded in 1851, Montagu started off as a Dutch Reformed congregation. Named after John Montagu, the village lies in a picturesque valley and is dotted with thatched Cape Dutch cottages dating as far back as the 1850s.
Montagu is most popular for its hot mineral springs reputed to have wonderful healing powers. Located just outside the town, the springs are popular with locals and foreigners visiting from abroad in search of a little pampering. The main baths are very popular and visitors are recommended to book at one of the hotels with exclusive access to the springs.
A popular activity for visitors to Montagu, is the Montagu Tractor Trip to the summit of the Langeberg Mountains. The views, the potjie and the wines at the top taste that much better. Other activities in Montagu include a visit to the Montagu museum, hiking, fishing, horse riding and visiting the local wine farms.
