Although not on Route 62, Matjiesfontein is a picturesque little village dating back over a century in the Karoo. The village gained repute in the past as a Victorian health and holiday resort for the powerful, rich and famous of the Cape Colony. The village provides a trip down memory lane with an authentic old pub, restored luxury hotel, historic post office, museums and railway station from days gone by. The Lord Milner Hotel is probably what Matjiesfontein is most famous for and an overnight stay at the hotel in luxury is a great way to take a break from it all.
