The tradition of wine growing in Franschhoek began some 300 years ago with the settling of the valley by French Huguenots. The new settlers brought with them from France, the tradition and the skills required to produce top quality wines.
The Franschhoek wine route has close 30 estates producing quality wines with some open for visits and tastings either on a drop-in basis or by appointment. In addition to their wine offerings, a few estates also run restaurants. Be sure to confirm with the estate their openings hours, especially from May to October when the tourism industry tends to slow down during the low season. A few of the more popular estates are listed bellow.
