Simon Van Der Stel, one of the first settlers in the Cape of Good Hope and began what was to become the first commercially successful wine estate in 1812 in South Africa here, Groot Constantia, a national monument operational and renowned for its wines today. Vin de Constance, Napoleon Bonaparte's favourite, was and is still produced here. Other reputable wine estates in Constantia include Klein Constantia, Steenberg, Constantia Uitsig and also known for their world-class vintages.
Constantia today is an affluent and leafy suburb in the southern suburbs of Cape Town with sprawling estates, streets lined with gorgeous trees and some of the first homes built in Cape Town. The houses are characterised by their classy Cape Dutch, Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian facades.
A pleasant walk in the Constantia Forest is a nice activity in the area.
