Claiming your South African VAT Refund

VAT - Value Added Tax - is charged on most products and services in South Africa. Visitors can claim their VAT Refund on items purchased to be taken out of the country with a value over R 250.00. Visitors should keep their purchase slips for items to leave the country in a safe place. On departure, arrive at your port of exit (airport, port, border post) slightly earlier to claim your refund with your purchase slips, as VAT Refund queues, particularly at airports, can become long. Should you be due a refund a cheque, a payment to your credit card or a foreign draft in a few select foreign currencies will immediately be issued to you.
