Helderberg Farm Hiking Trail

The Helderberg Farm hiking trail is situated just between Somerset West and Stellenbosch at the Burnt Orange turn off and signposted off the R44. The trail offers spectacular vineyard views, panoramic views of the Cape Winelands and of False Bay in the distance. The farm dates back to 1692 when Simon van der Stel granted land to Klaas Vechtman to grow crops. The farm is now owned by the Obermeyer family.

The trail is relatively easy with passes through the "Granny Forest, up to a hut with a beautiful dam where overnight accommodation can be booked, past the "Big Tree" - a Rock Candlewood believed to be one of the largest in the world and over several 100 years old - up to a great view point and for those interested in carrying on up to the west peak of the Helderberg.

There is currently a R 25 charge to hike the trail. There are several different trails available to hikers with the return to and from the west peak taking approximately 6 hours. Enjoy the views, vineyards, proteas and crisp clean air.
